Weekend guide to Bay City, Michigan!

If you’re looking to take an end of summer/early fall weekend trip away, consider Bay City, Michigan as your destination!  We have so much to offer here – shopping, dining, arts, entertainment, and more! Check out the itinerary below for many options on what to do and see while you are here.

Accommodation recommendations:  If you want to stay downtown, The DoubleTree is located right downtown on the water at 1 Wenonah Park Place.  Room rates on the weekend start at $149/night. This option allows walking access to shops and restaurants. If you’re looking for a Bed & Breakfast option, try the Historic Webster House located at 900 5th St. Established in 1886, the historic ambiance and exquisite details will not leave you disappointed.

Friday –

If you’re coming in on a Friday afternoon, check into your hotel and head over to The Riverfront Grille located inside the DoubleTree Hotel for an appetizer (Fire & Ice Lettuce Wraps are delicious) on the patio. The hotel is located in Wenonah Park with a beautiful riverfront view.

After relaxing on the patio, check out Real Seafood Company for dinner.  Take a walk along the riverfront to Uptown Bay City.  The restaurant is located right on the water with a large patio for outside seating if it is a nice night. It is usually pretty busy but you can grab a drink at the bar while you wait. The paella is a great entre option as well as the fish tacos. If you’re not a fish eater, check out the Stein Haus located at 1108 N. Water Street.

After dinner if you are up for checking out any local bars, head across the river to Governors Quarters. They have 15+ Michigan Craft Brews on tap and typically have live music and TV’s. They offer beer flights or just regular pints. Many options to taste and always a changing selection of craft brews! Great late night menu as well if you get hungry.

Saturday –

Our shops downtown have a lot to offer. There are a variety of stores offering many unique items – jewelry, clothing, specialty gifts, antiques, cheese, candies, etc.

Stop in to Harless & Hugh Coffee first at 1003 Washington Ave for your morning caffeine pick-me-up. The iced latte is my favorite drink! There is also a good chance they have delicious doughnuts from Bay City’s own Barney’s Bakery (the very best doughnuts ever in my very biased opinion)

After H+H, head over to Water Street to take a look at the antiques. Bay Antique Center is located at 1010 N. Water St and is the largest antique store in Michigan. They have many booths and a variety of cool items to choose from.  Other shops nearby that I personally love are Little House, Violet’s Blue and Super Chic Designs. You can find cute gift items such as stationery, candles, home accessories and vintage items. Super Chic designs offers repurposed furniture and some really beautiful home pieces. There isn’t a store downtown that isn’t worth stopping into!

After a few hours of shopping, I guarantee you will be hungry! We have many choices for lunch downtown. I suggest Tavern 101, American Kitchen or Old City Hall. All three offer different types of food and you really can’t have a bad meal.

My favorites include:

American Kitchen: California Turkey burger with Sweet Potato Fries

Old City Hall: Buffalo Chicken wrap with fries or the Chicken Nachos

Tavern 101: Tavern Club with seasoned fries or the Kale Salad

If you have a sweet tooth after a delicious lunch, stop into St. Laurent Brothers at 1101 N. Water St. Nuts, chocolates, candies and ice cream! You won’t leave there empty handed.

Saturday night, a dinner cruise on the Appledore or an evening out to a nice dinner will complete your Bay City weekend. Check out the Bay Sail website  http://www.baysailbaycity.org/public/baycity.htm for the schedule. There are even Sunday morning cruises on the Appledore for another option.

Sunday –

A walk, run or bike ride on the rail trail is a great morning exercise. Check out this link to see all 17.5 miles of Bay County's rail trail to see where to start. Please note, bicycles are not available for rent.

After you check out of your hotel room, head over to Uptown Grill located in Uptown Bay City. Great breakfast and lunch items on the menu with a great atmosphere.

That concludes my weekend guide to Bay City! If you are still looking to make plans to come here or if you are here and are interested in more things to do check out www.downtownbaycity.com for more events, parking, and more!
